Two Penguins

My name is Megan. I have a husband, Nick, and we are the proud parents of two crazy dogs. We live in Kentucky, and we love it. I'm trying to bring style into our home one project at a time.

A little project

So, over the weekend I just couldn't stand looking at my little black bookshelf anymore. I had been researching online how to paint cheap Walmart furniture, because that's what it was/is. I read a little blurb I found on Google and followed the directions.

I used Kilz oil based primer and just some cheap white water based paint over that.
I used a brush for the primer, but in hindsight I should have used a roller because it left
some brush marks. But, no one will even notice unless they're super close up so it's no big deal. I used a white foam roller I bought at Home Depot for the paint. It put the paint on so smooth and it looks really great. I used one coat of primer and two coats of white semi-gloss paint over that.

While painting I managed to get paint in my hair, all over my dog and on every limb of my body!! But the bookshelf is so much eaier to live with now, I'm totally OK with a little paint on my arms. The only other thing I'm waiting to do is maybe use a stencil down each side of it, but we'll see. Here is the pictoral evidence that I am handy!!!! LOL

I gathered stuff from around my house that wasn't doing anything, popped that pic I took into a cheap frame with computer paper behind it et voila! The piggy bank was a wedding gift that came stuffed with 1 dollar bills =)
I took the jackets off some hardback books and stacked those over to one side.
The white tray on top is used as a catch all. I usually put stuff in there that I need to take with me when I leave the house.
The white flower bowl is currently housing birthday cards from friends and family.
We keep our laptop on the top shelf b/c we ALWAYS need it at hand for something, plus we don't have a working office right now.

This little project is like a springboard for me bc now I want to do all the other little projects I've been putting off. Here are the pics:

Sorry the pictures aren't very good, my dog was being annoying and I didn't know I was on movie mode there for a little bit. But anywhoosie, hope you enjoy!

OH! PS: I still need something for the bottom right...

Southern Saturdays

Let's forget about that whiny little post of mine from earlier, k? Moving on!

Let me just say that I love living in the south. I will explain in a later post, but there's just something about being in the south that makes me feel like I'm home. I feel the most at home on Saturday nights in the summer, on the back porch with my friends. We drink lots of beer, talk about anything and maybe do something crazy. We're all out of our college years but we're still young, so if we decide to sit on the roof or go out on a boat in the middle of the night WE WILL!!

This past Saturday we went to our friend Jay's house and had a great time with alllll of our friends! Here are a few pictures:

This is Jay, pickin' away on the guitar.
We all tried to sing along and it was pretty funny!

Here's Austin on the roof...yes, he has a bottle of VOB
turned up..what can I say?

We went to WalMart after and made DELICIOUS burgers with fresh garlic, onions and avacado....mmmmm... I of course forgot to take a picture but they were SO GOOD!! I also had a Snickers Cheesecake Bar, which was also delish!

Sunday I was a little hungover so I laid on the couch, watched Two Weeks Notice(fave movie EVER!) and recovered. We went thrifting a little but didn't find much. There was a slipper chair I keep thinking about but I'm not sure if I have the time for a project right now. We'll see.. My parent's keep saying I should go back for it but I'm not sure. So how was your weekend?? Any good food or thrifting finds?

One of those days..

When was the last you had one of those days? Today is MY day... It all started last night when my brand new, dearly beloved iphone broke. It wouldn't charge right and I thought it was just my charger so I switched out the charger...no change. I hate when things like that happen because all day today I've been so anxious not knowing what to do or how I will LIVE without my new phone..(aren't I dramatic?) I currently have 3 other iPhones at my house...but I wanted my bright, shiny new one!

Then, work is slow and boring so it just leaves me with my thoughts about my phone, bills, money and will we EVER find a place to live? But really, work is the least of my worries.

I went home for lunch, in the heat of the day, only to find dog pee on the floor and a stinky pile of dishes... I don't get to leave work untill 6 today so now I have to choose between cleaning or going ot the gym. Boooo

Thrifting

It is currently Friday eve and I am in full on blog mode(mostly because I'm addicted to this blog). So I'm taking a moment to plot my weekend adventures.

I fully intend to spend a good chunk of time this weekend sifting through the riff raff at some of my local thrift stores. Our humble abode is in serious need of some cuter furniture, plus I'm itching to repurpose something. So hopefully the hubs will agree and he has no idea yet but I will be forcing him to take me to breakfast tomorrow morning, yum!

Here you see a picture of our calander and I will have you note the amount of times the weekends say LAKE. I will also have you note that THIS weekend says LAKE. I'm not a fan this weekend, so I talked him into not going. Yay for me! I now realize you can't see the other weekends, but they did say LAKE! I promise!

So hopefully, a thrifting we will go! Wish me luck...he's quite a bear in the mornings... I'm going to ply him with a deep fried breakfast burritto.

Domesticated

I remember when I was little my mom taught me to do the laundry..you turn on the water, you put the soap in and then the clothes. Looking back I have no clue why SHE was telling me this because my dad is the laundry nut. He taught me to sort the colors and what temperatures to use, so on and so forth. Fast forward to NOW: laundry is my freakin' favorite thing to do around the house(cleaning wise, anyway)! I love walking through the detergent isle and smelling all the wonderfulness that is laundry soap, I'm a fiend for softener and color safe bleach and I can't get enough of laundry sheets. Dorky, I know.

But recently I have expanded my domestic prowess and have actually been CLEANING. I know, weird right? I have always been a little messy(ask the hubs, he'll tell you allllll about it), but ever since we were forced to deep clean the house(I'll explain later) we made a decision to keep it looking this good. So last night I knew the house needed some serious help. I had hair balls like this:
Because of my precious little puppies. Aren't their little faces, er, behinds so sweet?
Anywho, after only a few minutes our house was hair free(kind of)and back in order. I spent the rest of my night relaxing with my hubby, some pizza and a BudLight(yes, i drink beer and I LLLLLOOOOVEEE it).

Hello there...

So it's been a little while since I posted much of anything and I will now give you a full update..YAY!

So in the last few months I have celebated my first wedding anniversary with my sweet husband. He is such a wonderful man and I really don't know what I did to deserve such a great man in my life. It probably has a little to do with the fact that my dad is also a good man, who always showed my brother and I that it's ok to show emotion and love family deeply. With him as my exaple it was easy to let go and let God show me the perfect man for me. Anywho, we were pretty much broke on our anniversary so we just exchanged small gifts and ate our frozen wedding cake.

Another big thing that has happened is that I finally got a new job! Woohoo!! I am out of clothing retail and I haven't looked back! I got a job(I can't really tell you where b/c I could be fired for that) with a fantastic company. I took a pay cut, but to save my sanity I would have done anything. I work 8am-4pm M-F and I LOVE IT! I love having weekends off to spend at my cute house or hanging out with my husband. For example, this weekend we will spend at the lake with our friends, last weekend we had a party at our house, 4th of July I went to the lake with the fam, and the list goes on and on. My hubby still hasn't found a "regular" 9-5 type job but he makes great money where he is so it's hard for him to walk away from it, plus he's just so darn successful. I love him.

Currently we are in the middle of some drama with our living situation. We have a really cute house but it has it's issues(it's out in the county which i HATE, the neighborhood isn't the greatest, it's 2 stories, the roof leaks, blah blah blah..) plus it's pretty expensive. And since we're renting it's not worth it to throw that kind of money away. We tried to buy a house but didn't have enough credit, which I cried about. So we were almost homeless a week ago but we got it worked out. NOW, we're waiting to hear about this little house that is literally RIGHT NEXT to Nick's sister!!! It's so exciting!!! Their neighborhood is prime if you're looking to be in the city but have a huge lot and nice trees! I want it to work out so badly. It has everything we need(less rent, hardwood floors, one story, huge backyard mostly fenced in, and the list goes on). So hopefully it will work out for us.

Also, I bought a new car! My old one was a 1996 Honda Accord. It only had 2 doors and 150,000 miles on it. It was so beat up bc I never really cared to take care of it for the last couple of years. When I first got it I loved it and it was a great car but it just started falling apart. So now I have a beautiful 2007 Toyota Camry! She's beautiful.

That's all I've got for now.
